Business & Industry

A diversified economy of small to medium sized businesses

Gogebic County's economic history is built around sectors that focus on forest-based industries including a variety of wood products and tourism activities.

A majority of the county is within the boundaries of the Ottawa National Forest.

Because of its topography and proximity to Lake Superior, Gogebic County is home to the Midwest's top ski resorts and is a growing destination for all season sport and recreation enthusiasts.

Significant industrial diversification has also introduced such industries as: precision tools, plastic molding, and fabric products.

In 1997, manufacturer shipments totaled $62.5 million and retail sales totaled $134.9 million.
